Take it away Trump

Unfortunately we had to "fire" one of our vendors over the weekend: The caterer. When we got engaged and the wedding lists appeared it seemed like we needed to rush into signing vendors right and left. Now I see this may be true for a few things, like your venues and photographer - definitely book those first, but with a wedding in small town in PA honestly other things can wait. We booked our caterer after being impressed with their menu online and Pittsburgh location, food must be better from the city right? Wrong. We thought there wasn't time to do a tasting since we were rarely home, but we did meet with the coordinator before signing and discuss a menu extensively. That's right. We never tasted the food. Tisk tisk.

Fast forward to our trip home in May. We were finally going to taste a portion of our menu and had several deposits behind us. This is what we tasted:

Mushroom risotto cakes

Shrimp wrapped with prosciutto

Pork tenderloin in a date glaze with mango chutney

bacon cheddar (and unexpected jalepeno) cornbread

Needless to say we didn't like any of it, even though it looked good, and I could go into why but why add insult to injury? Maybe it was an off day, but you can imagine our disappointment, after working with this company for nearly a year. Well we couldn't stomach letting one of the most important elements of our reception be anything less than great for you.

Other red flags were popping up. Like a good bride I would share pictures of what I had in mind for food display and what not, as mere inspirations .. not bridezilla demands, and I will say little or no attention was paid to these. In fact, and I do not mean to be negative, we all have bad days, but I shared a lovely setup for our bar, simple elegant... well I'll show you:

The response was - Bartenders like to setup whatever their used to. - This response was repeated as I tried to make it clear this is what I wanted for our wedding. They also told us not to hire our DOC, that they could handle things. We signed our DOC the next day. So. Today, we let them go.

But never fear! We wouldn't do such a thing without having a backup plan. Our families have been on the ball looking for a new caterer that could offer the type of food we wanted and last week my parents did a tasting! They loved it, and we know you will too. Lesson learned, don't buy the cow with out tasting the milk and don't let the monthly countdowns on those wedding lists make you feel otherwise.
