This weekend I tried to make a pom-pom from tissue paper. I was inspired to have poms at our wedding after seeing Kelly & Chris's wedding on style me pretty. Not only do they have Chris' initials everywhere, but one of the pictures showed her BMs wearing the same hair flowers I bought and am debating over for mine. Here are some photos from that post. I'm not sure why they are going up so small...

I actually asked the bride if she DIYed these and she said she got them from this etsy seller, which I immediately bookmarked as a possible supplier for our wedding. Of course the best esty sellars always have a wait note. She sells them as kits, seen below, that you fan out yourself. The 20 piece kit runs $4 each.
Then I found the tutorial on Martha Stewart and thought I'd give it a try. I purchased a pack of 8 sheets of red tissue at Pat Catans for something like $2 then followed the tutorial.
1.Stack eight 20-by-30-inch sheets of tissue. Make 1 1/2-inchwide accordion folds, creasing with each fold.
2. Fold an 18-inch piece of floral wire in half, and slip over center of folded tissue; twist. With scissors, trim ends of tissue into rounded or pointy shapes.
3. Separate layers, pulling away from center one at a time.
4. Tie a length of monofilament to floral wire for hanging.

Sounds simple enough right? Well here is a lesson learned: cutting through 8 pieces of tissue folded into an accordian isn't going to happen - at least it won't be pretty. Here is how my pom turned out. Note the not so round chewed-up edges! After a second tutorial search I think the better way to go is this: cut the scalloped edges before folding, or unfold the accordian, cut and refold. Also my pom is sitting on a table for a reason, 8 sheets weren't enough to make it round and full, so I'd definitely use 12 sheets or more next time. Undetered I'm now searching for thicker tissue, some ripped while fanning them out, and am considering sending them home folded - as in my very own pom pom kit, ready to be fluffed.
